Appalachian Potters Market in Marion, N.C.
Yesterday was the 25th annual Potters show at McDowell High School in Marion, my closest town. This is the school where I have been substitute teaching this year. The work was exceptional, and sixty-six artists filled the gym and main salon of the school. Hundreds of people were looking for holiday gifts and just beautiful objects for their homes. I chose a sawdust fired, handformed vase from a potter in Forest City, east of Rutherfordton. This is the same technique used by the Catawba Indians for centuries for their clay work. The fire gives the clay a unique patina and color not possible with traditional glazes. North Carolina is a major center for claywork in America.
