Mount Mitchell Panorama

Finding a new perspective to view a major feature in these mountains is always exciting. Mt. Mitchell and the Black Mountain Range has always been a challenge to photograph, but yesterday I discovered a new vantage point that allows the entire range to be featured from a point to the southeast, which is perpendicular to the range itself. This ridge is located in the Glenwood District of McDowell County.

Mt. Mitchell, at 6,770 feet, is the peak to the far right. From this spot, the range is about 17 miles to the northwest.

Mt Mitchell

From a spot a quarter mile to the north, Mt. Mitchell sits in the yoke of two ridges. Note the new growth appearing in the forest as an early Spring bids farewell to Old Man Winter.

Hockory Nut

Moving north another half mile, this was the view of 3,100 foot Hickory Nut Mountain to the west. It is the first ridge above 3,000 feet when you approach the Blue Ridge from the east.
